I used to liken collage to the tambourine in music: sort of amusing, sort of annoying, and nothing you'd want to listen to for very long. I don't know what changed. Maybe looking at Matisse jostled something in my brain. Regardless, collage is a wonderful exercise. The scissors creates an edge and a line simultaneously. Painting out passages becomes practically unnecessary, as one color swatch can simply be swapped out for another. But that by no means makes it an easy process. What once seemed childish is remarkably challenging.
